Michael Miller has been named the next superintendent of schools/principal, effective July 1, the district said.

“Early in our search process, Mr. Miller stood out as a highly qualified candidate for our school district,” said Board of Education President Christopher Hudson. “His past leadership experience and passion for education, coupled with his ability to make strong connections with district staff and community, are the tenants of what we value in East Quogue. We look forward to having him as part of our school family.”

Miller joins the district from the Bridgehampton School District, where he has worked since 2015. During his tenure in Bridgehampton, Mr. Miller held several key administrative roles, including the director of physical education and athletics, the assistant principal and, most recently, the pre-K through 12 principal/director of physical education. Under his leadership, the district worked to revamp school curriculum, collaborate to develop enhanced safety protocols and establish strong relationships with all stakeholders, the district said.

“I am honored, humbled and extremely excited to be part of the East Quogue family,” Miller said. “I am looking forward to cultivating relationships with our wonderful students, our inspirational faculty and staff, and our supportive community who continues to value education and put our student needs first.”

Miller said he is inspired and energized by the community’s support for students and staff. He also thanked the BOE for their unwavering support and trust. “I look forward to serving the stakeholders of the East Quogue UFSD,” he said.

Miller received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the State University of New York at Cortland and his educational administrative degree from Stony Brook University.

Miller will follow in the longtime footsteps of principal and superintendent Robert J. Long Jr., who on Aug. 9 at 53, his obituary read.

Friends and colleagues expressed great sorrow after hearing the heartbreaking news.

“Robert was truly an asset to the community,” Denis Yuen said. “Our condolences to his family.”

“It’s very sad,” said Donna Giancontieri.

Kathy Tureski, former president of the East Quogue Board of Education, spoke of the community’s great loss. “So many memories,” she said. “I worked alongside him for 15 years out of the 20 I volunteered at East Quogue.”

Tureski added: “He will be deeply missed but lives on in all who knew him. We were so very lucky — he was one in a million.”
