Sachin Tendulkar and Lionel Messi – two names that are associated with the term legend and are in a class of their own. While their sports differ, their careers have a lot in common and the greatest prize of being world champions is an integral factor.
Sachin burst on the scene as a 16-year-old and became arguably the greatest batter of all time. With over 34,000 international runs and a record 100 tons across formats, Sachin’s biggest prize came in 2011 when he was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup. It was the pinnacle of his career and only 8 years back he had lost in the final. Sachin ultimately called it a day in 2013 after a stellar 24-year career.
Messi was also in his teens when he made his international debut for Argentina 18 years back. Already he was making a name for himself in Barcelona. In 2014, he was at the helm when Argentina lost in the FIFA World Cup final. For many, it seemed that Messi would as a legend without the World Cup, but fate had other plans. In 2022, Argentina won the title after over 3 and a half decades. Messi was leading the charge as they won a thrilling shootout to finally be a World Cup winner. In what was most likely his last World Cup, Messi finally managed to join the elite list.
2 legends with so many similarities. 8 years after losing a World Cup, they finally won. In their fields, they are considered from out of this world. We are indeed lucky to have seen them in their prime.
