To inspire you to do your bit, we’ve rounded up 7 easily achievable changes you can make that’ll minimise your impact on the environment.
The planet is drowning in plastic; global warming has been described as a crisis; and air pollution is clogging up our cities – so read on to see what you can get cracking on with straight away.

1) Go vegetarian for a day
With animal agriculture (factory farming) being one of the leading causes of climate change, going vegetarian for just ONE day a week can make a huge difference. Because we’re eating more meat that is available, we’ve had to turn to factory farming to crank out enough meat to satisfy our taste buds.
2) Control your obsession with fashion
How many of us have clothes, accessories or shoes we never wear – yet somehow feel the urge to buy more? Cheap fabrics like polyester, nylon, polyamide and acrylic fibres harm the environment because they omit tiny pollutants into water systems. Look closely at the clothes you have – you’ll be surprised at the outfits you can cobble together without buying more.
3) Buy your own bottle/ coffee cup
Ditch those plastic bottles and coffee cups that often get thrown away. Keep a reusable water bottle and / or coffee cup in all the places you might need them. Whether it’s in your car, at your desk, in your work bag – have them readily available so you won’t forget them next time you need your caffeine fix or a dose of hydration.
4) Ditch store-bought veggies, fruits
Talking of waste, how many of us have seen vegetables like carrots or cucumbers over-packaged in plastic? Buy loose fruit and veg when you can, as this minimises the need for single-use plastic.
5) Cut out junk mail
No one likes getting junk mail, yet we don’t do anything to stop it from happening (mostly because we didn’t know it was possible!) Thankfully, there is something you can do. Not only will this help unclog your (IRL) inbox but it can have a significant impact on the environment.
Block pre-approved credit card or loan mails and reduce the amount of unsolicited catalogs sent to you by unsubscribing to unnecessary addresses.
6) Get your own grocery bags
Keep a tightly rolled up reusable tote (or two) in your purse / work bag. That way, you can be ready for that impulse grocery run.
7) Watch your bathroom habits
Opt for shampoo bars and soap instead of shower gel to cut back on single-use plastic; switch to a bamboo toothbrush; or swap your regular loo roll for a brand made from recycled fibres.

Other than this, switching off your light bulbs, turning off the tape while brushing your teeth, turning off the power switches when not in use, reducing plastic use are some of the regular habits that have been spoken about for years. It’s high time we adapt them.
