‘Kept driving out of fear’
They have reportedly told the police that they did not stop the car out of fear. They said they knew someone was stuck under the car but they kept driving and took several U-turns to shake off the body.
Anjali Singh, 20, was returning home with a friend on her scooter when she was hit by a car a little after 2 am. Her leg was stuck in the car’s front wheel, and she was dragged away by the car, while her friend Nidhi fell on the other side and suffered minor injuries. Later, Nidhi fled from the spot out of fear.
“Culpable homicide not amounting to murder”
Five men were arrested on January 1, hours after Anjali Singh was hit and dragged for 13 km from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in North Delhi. They have been charged with “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”, rash driving, and causing death by negligence.
The incident led to widespread outrage across the national capital with many demanding stern action against the accused.
During the investigation, the accused, who were allegedly in an intoxicated state when the incident took place.
‘Were terrified to be caught with a dead woman’
They also told the police that they were terrified of stopping the car as they believed they would be caught with a dead woman and would be charged with murder. They were especially worried, they said, because Amit Khanna, who was driving the car, does not have a driving license.
Anjali Singh’s body was found at 4:40 am with her clothes ripped off and her skin peeled away. She died of more than 40 injuries, some so severe that her ribs were exposed from her back.
