Five Men Came To Kerala For A Friend's Funeral, Three Flew Back On The Ill-Fated Flight

A family in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala has been left shocked to learn that three of their friends were among those killed in the air crash in the city of Pokhara on Sunday.

The three men Raju, Robin and Anil along with two others had just left Kerala on Sunday after attending the funeral of their Indian colleague.

Mathew Philip, a resident of Anikkadu in Pathanamthitta had died of cancer on January 11.

Philip was a Christian missionary who worked in Nepal for decades and returned home some two years ago after he was diagnosed with cancer.

Two missed the fill-fated flight

Raju, Robin and Anil along with Deepak and Saran came to Kerala to attend the funeral of Philip on January 13.

While Raju, Robin and Anil died in the fatal air crash on Sunday, Deepak and Saran had missed the ill-fated flight.

“The funeral was on January 13. Their flight was from Kochi to Mumbai and from there to Kathmandu. Deepak and Saran, could not board the ill-fated flight from Kathmandu but the other three took the flight. The news was a shock to us,” Philip’s brother Thomas said.

Yeti Airlines flight crashed just before landing   

Yeti Airlines’ 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft took off from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport at 10:33 AM and crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport, minutes before landing, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).

The ATR-72 had a total of 72 people on board when it crashed while landing at the newly-opened airport in the resort city of Pokhara.

No survivors likely

70 of the occupants have been confirmed dead while the search for two more people listed as ‘missing’ is continuing.

Fifteen foreign nationals onboard the plane included five Indians, four Russians, two Koreans, an Australian, a French, an Argentine, and an Israeli.

Families of Indians leave for Nepal

The families of four Indians killed in he crash left for Nepal on Monday.

The bodies will reach Kathmandu from Pokhara on Tuesday, after which the process of ascertaining their identities will begin.

In case physical identification is not possible, DNA sampling will be done and matched with family members.

After the bodies are identified, they will be sent to India by road and are expected to reach on Wednesday or Thursday.

The four youths from UP Sonu Jaiswal, Anil Rajbhar, Vishal Sharma and Abhishek Kushwaha were going to Pokhara from Kathmandu after offering prayer at Pashupatinath temple on Sunday in Nepal’s ill-fated Yeti Airline flight.
