CANTON, CT — In less than two years, the nation will be celebrating a milestone anniversary as the United States will mark 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed.
But in Canton, there are also other major anniversaries to mark, and the Canton Board of Selectmen at its last meeting appointed someone to create the Canton CT 250 Committee.
In addition to the national birthday, Canton’s 2026 will mark the 200th anniversary of the Collins Co. (the sharp-tool manufacturer that is the namesake of the historic Collinsville village) and the 220th anniversary of the Town of Canton’s incorporation.

The committee would operate like, say, the town’s Memorial Day Parade committee and oversee various events associated with the events of 2026.
Canton Public Library Director Sarah McCusker approached town officials about the 250 committee, with selectmen unanimously approving her role to form the new group.

As a result, McCusker is in charge of forming the committee to organize the myriad local events expected during the 2026 festivities.
2026 is expected to be a lot like the 1976 Bicentennial celebration that dominated American, state, and local culture.
Canton’s formation of the new 250 group came in the form of a board of selectmen resolution.

According to the resolution, selectmen and Canton staff will work with, and support, the new group.
Selectmen officially charged the Canton CT 250 Committee with:
• Updating the Canton Board of Selectmen quarterly on the status of planned events.
• Keep selectmen apprised of any issues that may interfere with the implementation of successful town events.
• The committee shall strive to have local stakeholders participate on the committee inclusive of both residents and businesses in the Town of Canton.
