HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Mother Nature graced Hampton Bays with blue skies and a beautiful breeze Sunday afternoon, perfect weather for the second day of the 12th San Gennaro Feast of the Hamptons.

A highlight of Sunday’s lineup of entertainment was a zeppole eating contest: Those participating were challenged with eating 12 zeppoles in three minutes.
Before the event, emcee Sal Russo revved up the crowd as the tables were filled with the bags of zeppoles from Rosalia Zeppoles and bottles of water for the food challenge, sponsored by Greenport Fire hot sauces.

“The grease is pouring out of the bags,” Russo joked. “Excellent.”
Contestants, some plucked from the crowd minutes before the challenge, lined up excitedly, one man wearing an “Italians Do It Better” T-shirt.
In the end, Chris Scull of Hampton Bays won by a mile, cleaning up every single zeppole in his bag.
Not a surprise — he also was the reigning champ of the pizza eating contest Saturday night.
Coming in second in the zeppole competition was Frank Agrito of Ronkonkoma, with Jen Smith of Port Jefferson taking third place.
Scull, when asked what his secret was for winning, smiled. “I was hungry,” he said simply.
The San Gennaro Feast of the Hamptons is a charitable organization 501c(3) “focused on bringing our community together and helping to extend our season so that everyone can see that there are plenty of things to do here in the beautiful fall season. We are focused on raising money to help those in need and have set up a scholarship fund for our local schools,” organizers said.
Crowds headed to Hampton Bays as the smell of sizzling sausage and peppers, meatballs and calzones wafted through the air.
The event featured Italian delicacies, artisans, a carnival, live entertainment, fireworks by Grucci and cannoli, zeppole and meatball eating contests — all the tastes of Italy, right on the East End.
Music and dance had the crowd smiling and laughing on a picture perfect September afternoon.
