AURORA, IL — A single-family house in the 400 block of Superior Street in Aurora caught fire on Dec. 28, killing two pets and displacing a family, officials said.

A total of 26 personnel responded to the 2.5-story residence at about 7:36 p.m. Saturday. The first arriving units reported heavy fire on the front side of the house with a walk-up attic.
Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack, with engine teams extinguishing the fire on the first floor before advancing to the second and third floors, while truck companies searched for people inside the residence.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control within 24 minutes and fully extinguished it in 1.5 hours, according to a news release.
A bird and a cat died in the fire, officials said, but a lizard was rescued alive.

The structure was deemed uninhabitable. The Red Cross and Victim Services were called in to assist the family with temporary accommodations, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Tuesday.
“Our firefighters worked with remarkable efficiency and teamwork to contain this fire and safeguard the surrounding area,” Fire Chief David McCabe said in a statement. “This incident is a reminder that half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February. Taking extra precautions during the winter months is essential to keeping your family and home safe.”
