Overdue Recognition Art Gallery Represents Dozens Of African American Artists

BOWIE, MD — Overdue Recognition Art Gallery in Bowie showcases a collection of African American art created by sought-after artists.

“Our artists use their artwork to interpret and portray African American history, socio-economic realities, political challenges, rich traditions and diverse beauty. The gallery houses a diverse array of artwork that includes paintings, sculptures and limited editions reproductions,” according to the gallery, which is owned by Derrick and Jackie Thompson.

Located at 15402 Emerald Way, the gallery opened in 2004. Overdue Recognition Art Gallery represents more than 40 African American artists, Jackie Thompson told Patch. They offer fine art originals and reproductions for sale, custom framing services and an event rental space.

“These artists are high in aesthetic quality and strong in investment potential. Our custom framing services are popular for conservation of the art, too,” Thompson told Patch. “We are passionate about art and committed to art as an essential part of life and therefore, exhibit, collect, preserve and encourage art.”

This month, the art gallery celebrates its 20th anniversary. They love being in the Bowie community because of all the support they receive, Thompson said.

“Our customers are happy we are a part of the community, that we fulfill our educational goals about art through lectures, workshops, intimate gallery talks and exhibitions with the artist in attendance,” Thompson told Patch. “Our customers are men and women interested in starting or enhancing their art collections, they live in the DMV and we ship art all over the United States.”
