WESTFIELD, NJ — A town-wide street sign replacement program will soon get underway in Westfield.
The program was first announced in April as part of a plan to improve safety in the Town with larger signs and larger letters. It would also replace the mismatched array of street signs that range from green to black to white and make them a consistent color.
“This program will significantly increase visibility to drivers and first responders and provide a safer experience as well as create an aesthetically appealing uniform consistent theme throughout town,” said Westfield DPW Director Craig Gibson at the Sept. 10 Council meeting.

The Town Council previously approved the purchase of a new plotter and pin roller so the DPW can work in-house to install 1,350 new street signs to replace existing street signs throughout Westfield.
“Over the years many of the signs have become worn, faded, and otherwise damaged due to age and weather deteoraion, storms, and motor vehicle accidents,” said Gibson.

The signs will be rebranded into Westfield’s navy blue and white reflective signs, said Town Administrator Jim Gildea.
“There will be larger signs, larger print, and branded exactly the same around the entire Town,” said Gildea.
Work on the street sign program will start in October.
Gibson noted that the Town will “continue to recognize those streets within our historic districts as well as our gold star streets with the appropriate colors and or markings.”

As the old signs are removed, the Town will photograph them to auction them off for residents to have as a keepsake.
Proceeds from the auction will either go to an organization of the Town’s choosing or be used to offset the program, said Gildea.
