PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Phoenixville has become an official “Bird Town,” a program spun off from the National Audubon Society that recognizes municipalities for their commitment to conservation and avian stewardship.
Phoenixville joins 68 other municipalities across Pennsylvania in gaining the status.
“Birds are natural indicators of ecological health,” said, Heidi Shiver, the manager of Bird Town Pennsylvania. “Small steps in a backyard can increase the diversity of birds and at the same time create a healthier living environment for people and pets.”

The official designation came at this week’s borough council meeting.
Moving forward, Bird Town and the Audubon Society will help Phoenixville to highlight the borough’s ecological diversity and wildlife resources, as well as provide outreach and environmental education to property owners as to how they can make their yards and homes more bird friendly.

“With our incredible partners in the Borough of Phoenixville, residents will surely hear more about their role in the lives of birds,” Shiver added. “I’m confident that they will be amazed to find out what birds come through this area during migration.”
A thriving bird ecosystem has positive ripple effects across the environment. Species diversity among birds allows native plant life to flourish, and birds are a significant predator of nuisances and disease spreading creatures like mosquitoes and ticks.
