FAIRFIELD, CT — A new pocket park, which overlooks scenic Ash Creek, was recently completed in Fairfield.
The small park, located at the corner where Ash Street becomes Dalewood Avenue, is the fifth pocket park created under a grant program by the Greater Fairfield Board of Realtors, according to Michael Traum, who oversees such efforts for the board.
“This is done through our Placemaker grant program,” Traum told Patch, before a dedication ceremony on Monday. He added that the board hopes to create one pocket park per year.

Through the program, the board donated $5,000 for the creation of the park, which included the installation of a pair of Adirondack chairs overlooking the creek, the removal of a Tree of Heaven, and clearing and containment of Knotweed and other undergrowth. DeLaurentis Developments installed the cement slab upon which the chairs rest.
To help contain the undergrowth, vinyl tarps were donated by Lamar Advertising, the billboard company, which the town places over the weeds to smother them, according to Fairfield Conservation Director Tim Bishop.

“It’s a movement,” said First Selectman Bill Gerber of the creation of the pocket parks throughout town. “They help get people outside, which can help with overall health.”
According to Traum, the other pocket parks created by the board are at:
The pocket parks are so small, they do not offer any recreational use, so being used in a passive way “is a better use of the space,” Bishop told Patch. “They create something that’s useable.”
