CINNAMINSON, NJ — Vehicle thefts in Cinnaminson have surged recently, and many share a similarity that has made them easy to steal.
Cinnaminson had two stolen vehicles reported in July, followed by four so far in August, Committeeman Ernest McGill said during Monday’s Township Committee meeting. Five vehicles in the township were stolen from January through June.
The recent incidents have shared a commonality, said McGill, the committee liaison for public safety.

“The thefts are due to a lack of an immobilizer system,” he said, describing an electronic security system that prevents the engine from being started unless the correct key is present.
Hyundai, Kia and Dodge models represent the majority of vehicles that have been targeted, McGill said. He encouraged vehicle owners to make sure they’re up to date on anti-theft software.

“Residents are encouraged to download the most current software available for their vehicles,” McGill said, “and to make sure they have the most-updated anti-theft software, which will include an immobilizer system.”
Kia and Hyundai thefts have surged over the past few years, as some of their models can lack basic anti-theft technology. The automakers agreed to a $200 million class-action settlement earlier this year because of the issue impacting up to 9 million vehicle owners.
