Eastern Montco Democrats Praise Biden For Dropping Out Of Race

EASTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA —State Rep. Nancy Guenst met Vice President Kamala Harris two years ago in Philadelphia at a function in Center City to speak about women’s health and reproductive rights, the LGBTQ community, and a few other issues.

“It was a great day,” Guenst told Patch Monday. “No press was allowed in the room, just about a dozen representatives and a few senators. We could speak freely without judgment.”

So Guenst was backing Harris’ being at the top of the Democratic ticket for president against former President Donald Trump while also praising President Joseph Biden for stepping down for the good of the party.

“God bless President Biden. This had to be an extremely difficult decision to make, but it was the right thing to do,” Guenst said. “Vice President Kamala Harris is an amazing person. She is intelligent, kind, and empathetic. She will be a powerful President.”

Guenst was one of several Eastern Montgomery County lawmakers to speak about Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 race and Harris getting Biden’s endorsement to replace him on the ticket.

“Grounded in a love of country and a lifetime of service, President Biden has led our nation for the past three and a half years with dignity, empathy, and unwavering patriotism,” State Rep. Madeleine Dean said in a statement. “He has prioritized everyday Americans, guided the United States into pandemic recovery, and enacted some of the most consequential legislation in a generation — modernized infrastructure, cleaner water, lower prescription drug costs, and the first gun safety law in 30 years, to name a few. I’m deeply grateful to work alongside President Biden every day, and I am excited to do so for the remainder of his term. Thank you, Mr. President.”

State Rep. Melissa Cerrato said she holds “immense respect” for those who rise to the occasion, putting aside their own comforts to selflessly serve their communities and President Biden is no exception.

“From the very beginning of his career, he has shown us what it means to lead with compassion, integrity, and an unyielding dedication to justice. President Biden’s efforts to rebuild our economy, strengthen our healthcare system, and address the pressing issues of climate change have left an indelible mark on our country,” Cerrato told Patch. “However, true selflessness sometimes means stepping aside to let others lead when the moment calls for it. Today, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to President Biden for his decades of unwavering service to our nation and his willingness to pass the torch. His leadership has guided us through some of our darkest times, bringing us to this historic moment with resilience and hope.”

Cerrato said with the upcoming November general election that it’s “crucial that we unite behind a candidate who embodies our shared values and is committed to making this country the best it can be for all Americans.”

“This is why I enthusiastically endorse our Vice President Kamala Harris to pick up the torch in the next leg of this election cycle,” Cerrato said. “Vice President Kamala Harris, together with President Biden, has shown us that progress is possible when we work together with empathy and determination and I look forward to what she can accomplish in the role of President. I hope that, like me, you are filled with a renewed sense of excitement and optimism for our future. Together, we can achieve great things. United we stand, divided we fall—let us stand together in solidarity and work towards a brighter future for everyone.”
