SIMSBURY, CT — With the start of a new fiscal year earlier this month, Simsbury’s top school official has started a new term of employment that comes with a pay raise.
The Simsbury Board of Education at its last meeting June 11 unanimously approved a new, three-year contract for 12-year Simsbury Superintendents of Schools Matthew T. Curtis.
According to the contract, Curtis will receive a 2.9 percent pay raise starting in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which ups his salary to $256,588, not including benefits.

The board’s full vote came after the school board’s personnel and negotiations subcommittee recommended approval of the new pact.
“As we do every year, we review the superintendent contract and how the year went and set up goals for the following year,” Simsbury Board of Education Chairman Jeffrey E. Tindall said. “We came to the conclusion of the motion that has come before us now.”

Board members praised Curtis’ leadership.
“I think we’re very very fortunate to have Matt. We’re lucky to have him stay with us,” said board member Brian M. Watson, who motioned for the contract’s approval.
The term of the new deal is for the 2024-25 to the 2026-27 school year, according to the pact.
Other fringe benefits outlined in Curtis’ new deal with the school system include:
• Annual, $20,000 payments by the school board into a tax-free annuity.
• A total of 22 sick days per year, with up to 220 days allowed to accumulate and be used later if necessary.
• A total of 30 vacation days a year, with an annual carryover of vacation days capped at 10.
• Reimbursement for any out-of-state conferences and travel, with an in-district travel allowance of $3,500 per year.
Tindall thanked Curtis for his work in Simsbury schools, which he has led since 2012.
“We have a tremendous leader in the school system. He puts forward a great team. Puts forward a great product. And that is really to your leadership,” Tindall said.
