Animal Rescue In Need After Galloway Hoarding Situation

GALLOWAY, NJ — After taking in dozens of additional animals rescued from a hoarding situation, an Egg Harbor City shelter is in need of help.

Nancy Santos, 57, was charged with 43 counts of animal neglect after police found seven dead pets in her freezer and 36 living animals in “inhumane conditions” at a Galloway home, police said. Read more: Dead Pets Found In Freezer Of Galloway Home: Police

Now, Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue is in “desperate need” of donations, fosters and adopters after taking in those living animals, a volunteer with the organization told Patch.

The rescue is seeking fosters and adopters for their existing pets to clear up space for the hoarding animals. These pets are currently being vetted and treated as they came in bad shape.

“They have sores, eye infections, malnutrition, as well as other health issues,” a volunteer said.

Once they are done being treated, they will need temporary fosters. There is a possibility of adoption in the future, but as of right now, Santos still technically is the owner of the 36 cats and dogs. She’s signed them over and allowed fostering, and she is being urged to surrender them as a judge is nearly certain to deny ownership if it comes to a court hearing, the rescue told Patch.

In the meantime, Kimmy’s has paid for all vetting and grooming. The rescue also needs donations to cover treatment, medications and follow-up visits until the animals are healthy.

It’s already a difficult season for many shelters statewide. Kimmy’s and many more rescues are at capacity, and space is limited. They hope to get some of their existing shelter dogs into forever homes to free up space for the new rescues when they are ready for adoption.

You can help Kimmy’s in the following ways:

The following dogs are available for adoption at Kimmy’s.

Mary Bear – everyone loves Mary at the rescue. She is described as very friendly and good with people and kids. She is learning leash skills. She needs a home with no cats and is particular with other dogs, but has lived with them in the past. Mary is young and trainable, so a meet and greet is recommended as she could very well adapt to another dog with proper introduction.

Baby – Baby is 12-years-old and a senior. He’s good with calm dogs, but due to his age can’t handle rambunctious pups. Cats are fine. He needs a calm home with no children. Baby has cherry eye but it’s not an issue, it just is a problem with his breed.

Nugget – Nugget is “happy, go lucky, affectionate and very bouncy.” He loves cats, dogs and people. He’s learning to walk nicely on a leash and loves scratches behind his ears. Nugget is eager to learn, especially with treats.
