NYC Weather: Mostly Sunny With A Chance Of Eclipse

NEW YORK CITY — Monday starts off as mostly sunny, until the moon blocks out about 90 percent of it this afternoon.

For New Yorkers equipped with eclipse eyewear anticipating the celestial dance in the sky between the sun and moon, the weather forecast couldn’t be better, according to the National Weather Service’s forecast.

“Mostly sunny, with a high near 65,” the forecast says for Monday.

That means the Big Apple — though not in the path of totality — will get a great line of sight for the eclipse this afternoon.

At the peak of the eclipse, the moon will block out about 90 percent of the sun by about 3:25 p.m.

If you plan on staring at the sun, you must wear specialized protective eyewear to protect against permanent eye damage — regular sunglasses won’t help.

Free eclipse shades will be handed out at libraries across the city, and they can also be picked up at Moynihan Train Hall on Monday.

As a reminder, here’s when the big eclipse show begins for New York City:

Partial eclipse begins: 2:10 p.m.

Totality begins: 2:51 p.m.

Maximum: 3:25 p.m.

Partial ends: 4:36 p.m.

After the eclipse, the weather forecast for New York City looks great for Tuesday. But then, the weather is predicted to slide back into rain.

The National Weather Service’s forecast says that showers could start Tuesday night and into Wednesday, with a 40-50 percent chance of rain, but by Thursday, the rain is predicted to arrive and last until Friday.
