Phillies Postpone Home Opener Due To Forecast

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Phillies season opener Thursday against the Atlanta Braves has been postponed due to the rain forecasted to hit the region.

The game will now be held on Friday at 3:05 p.m. Since Friday was a scheduled off day, the remainder of the Braves series on Saturday and Sunday is not impacted.

“Due to the anticipated rain on Thursday, we have elected to move our home opener with the Braves to Friday,” Phillies Executive Vice President David Buck said in a statement from the team Thursday. “This decision was made after consultation with Major League Baseball and various weather services. The open date on Friday gives us the ability to reschedule the game.”

Both teams will keep their starting pitching lineup the same for the series, with aces Zack Wheeler and Spencer Strider battling.

Gates will open at 12:35 p.m. Friday, the Phillies said in their announcement.

The matchup had been slotted as the premier Opening Day battle in all of baseball, as the Phillies and Braves are arch rivals with a ton of recent history both contending for a World Series title. The Braves have won six division titles in a row, but the Phillies have knocked them out of the playoffs in the past two autumns.

Saturday at 3:05 p.m. will see Aaron Nola face Max Fried, while Chris Sale will face Ranger Suarez Sunday at 1:35 p.m.
