Lafazan Blames 'Uphill Battle' Redistricting For Re-Election Loss

SYOSSET, NY — Joshua Lafazan is reevaluating his political future after being dealt a blow with an Election Day loss.

The Nassau County Legislator from Syosset said gerrymandering in the district undermined his re-election chances.

“Running in a district without Syosset, Woodbury, Muttontown, Brookville and these other areas, which have been supporting me since I’m a teenager …was an uphill battle,” Lafazan told Patch.

Lafazan, who’ll be 30 in January, lost to Republican Samantha Goetz with 42 percent of the electorate.

A year ago, Lafazan ran in the primary for the 3rd Congressional District. He previously announced another bid for the seat, currently held by Rep. George Santos.

However, since the Nov. 7 loss, Lafazan put his support behind former congressman Tom Suozzi, seeking to win the seat back.

Instead, Lafazan filed paperwork for an expected state senatorial run next year.

“I’m exploring ways to continue to serve my community,” he said.

While Lafazan won’t be part of the congressional race, he’s still voicing his concern about Santos, who could be holding onto office for only a few more days. The House Ethics Committee chairman filed a resolution on Friday to expel him. That vote could happen after the Thanksgiving recess.

“It’s a continued charade,” Lafazan said of the alleged use of campaign funds for personal items. “This is so absurd that it’s a bad SNL [skit]. He’s embarrassing us on an international stage. It is time the House throws him out for good.”
