Drive-By Shooting Near School In Newark, Teen Wounded: Police

NEWARK, NJ — A drive-by shooting took place outside a school in Newark on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the shooting took place around 12:05 p.m. at 17th Avenue and Sayre Street, a short distance from Central High School. A 15-year-old male was wounded. He was transported to University Hospital and is in stable condition.

All other students have resumed their schedule and will be dismissed at the regular time, school officials said.

A police investigation continues. No additional details were immediately available.

The shooting happened during a fire drill related to a potential a gas leak, multiple news outlets reported.

According to PSE&G, it received a report about a potential gas leak at 11:53 a.m. and a crew arrived on the scene by 12:11 a.m., at which time the students had already been evacuated. After an investigation, PSE&G workers determined that there was no leak, a spokesperson said.
